Commission from BwD Public Health
The aim is to support and advise families affected with genetic conditions and enhance access to appropriate genetic services. The initiative is supported by weekly genetic clinics at the Royal Blackburn hospital which are delivered by a registered Genetic Counsellor employed by the Regional Clinical Genetic Service. The service supports families in the community and at home covering the BwD area.
Awareness raising sessions on genetic conditions and recessive inheritance are continuously delivered to health professionals, community and voluntary sector and tutorials have been developed for 6th forms and colleges.
Work to date has shown that families are receptive to information and support but often do not know what is available or how to access appropriate services. The project has provided training sessions to primary health care professionals as well as community and voluntary organisations.
